State Regulations
Although passing the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork is a crucial step in launching a massage therapy career, it is by no means the last step. According to Jason Thies, director of administration for the National Certification Board,
"One of the standards of practice of the national board is that you follow all the guidelines and rules of your local ordinance, also. Whether it be state, city or municipal, you need to follow those rules for licensure."
It is important to fully understand both the state and local regulations concerning professional massage therapy. This holds true whether you want to join an existing clinic or whether you want to open your own private massage therapy practice. You'll need to check the zoning regulations of whatever district you are in. Use the following list to begin researching what specific laws and requirements pertain to you and your home state. Your local massage professional organization will help you navigate your way through all of the regulatory red tape.
