A Career in Massage Therapy
Why are massages so popular? You'd be surprised how many people are in pain, and are willing to pay to relax. Just a few years ago, 20% of Americans reported some sort of muscle stiffness or back pain.

More and more people are seeking massages for their muscle and back pain. Massages can help major health issues like arthritis, immune function disorders, and some cardiac problems, as well as more straightforward health issues like headaches and stress.

It is rare that you can go to a shopping center, mall, hotel, or resort without seeing a day spa that offers massages. Nearly 70% of people who attended spas in 2003 either went to spas or have been to spas for massages. Some massages are even covered by health insurance companies, making prospective clients more eager.

The Job of the Massage Therapist
Many massage therapists are self-employed or own their own massage business. Others work at day spas, in health clinics, at schools, or even in hospitals.

Providing patient, caring service to clients is essential to your success as a massage therapist. As much as 15-20% of most massage therapists' incomes come from gratuities, which can bring your hourly rate up a lot. Two years ago, the highest paid 10% of massage therapists earned over $30 per hour.

Sounds pretty good, right? The way to get there is to become certified in massage therapy. You can simply earn the certificate, either on-campus or online, or enter a degree program that will offer you both the certificate in massage therapy and a degree in natural health or physical therapy. You can do this online too.
