Massages -- A Career for the Future
If you've ever thought about a job giving massages, then here's what you need to know in a nutshell. As more and more people discover the health benefits of massages, so massage therapy has become increasingly accepted by mainstream healthcare providers. That means massages are a growth area, where the financial rewards can match your job satisfaction. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for massage therapists is expected to increase faster than average over the period from 2004 to 2014. The top 10 per cent earned more than $32 per hour in 2004 (including gratuities).
How to Learn About Massages
With around 1300 training programs on over 80 different types of massages to choose from, there is something to suit every interest, time schedule and budget. Programs can vary from between 300 and 1,000 hours of in-class training and from diploma to degree level. You can even take an online diploma, with some practical training in massages to complete the course. Areas studied will most likely include anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, how to assess clients and apply massages, plus ethics and business practice. Your program should be accredited by a State board or an approved accreditation agency. Once you're qualified and have some experience, you might specialize by attending one of the many workshops on techniques for different massages. Many therapists go on to gain certification with the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). If you'd like to become an expert in giving massages, then a fulfilling career awaits you.
