Physical Therapy as an Alternative Medicine for Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common health problems in America, affecting an estimated eight out of 10 people, according to a 2005 report from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Not content to rely on pain pills or undergo invasive surgery, many Americans are turning to alternative medicine for back pain.
A 2005 survey conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation showed that an equal number of respondents (28 percent) ranked hands-on therapy as the treatment that brought them the most relief from pain--tying medication as the preferred form of pain treatment for the first time in nine years of conducting the same survey.
If you are considering a career in physical therapy, now is the time to go for it. As more Americans continue to seek alternative medicine for back pain, more qualified people will be needed to provide the physical therapy that brings relief.
To become a physical therapist, you must graduate from an accredited physical therapist education program and pass a licensure exam. However, don't limit yourself to physical therapy programs on traditional campuses, especially if you have full-time commitments, such as a job or family. Many colleges offer online degree programs in physical therapy, so you can study on your own time. Expect basic science courses before getting into specialized subject areas, such as biomechanics, neuroanatomy, and therapeutic procedures.
With the proper education, you can enter the field of physical therapy and be on your way to providing the alternative medicine for back pain that so many people seek.
