Sports Massage As Naturopathic Medicine
If you are a sports massage therapist, you probably already know that most athletes like to stay clear of any types of drugs (even clinical ones). This is why a sports massage is so effective as naturopathic medicine. In this type of medicine, practitioners use entirely natural, organic remedies as opposed to synthetic pharmaceutical drugs. Herbal extracts, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy, reflexology, Reiki, and acupressure are all different types of naturopathic medicine.
How Does a Sports Massage Differ from a Regular Massage?
In actuality, the two are fairly similar. Except that with a sports massage, a practitioner focuses on localized areas of the body for the purpose of enhancing overall athletic performance. And quite often, an athlete will have suffered from some type of injury quite recently, so a typical sports massage must take such factors into account. A sports massage therapist won't necessarily apply the same level of pressure if an athlete is recovering from an injury or an extremely intense workout.
Where Can I Learn Sports Massage?
Most massage therapy programs have extensive coursework in sports massage therapy. But you can also study physical therapy or sports medicine to receive the necessary training in this particular field. It is also possible to study regular massage therapy or naturopathic medicine and simply adjust your routine to fit the requirements of whatever athletes you treat.
