Stress Management for Low Back Pain Relief
Low back pain is one the most common ailments in America today. If you become a massage therapist, the overwhelming majority of your patients will come to you for low back pain relief of some sort. While massage therapy is extremely effective at treating the main symptoms of back pain, it has certain limitations for chronic back pain. Only by addressing the underlying causes can you hope to provide genuine, long-lasting low back pain relief.
Stress Management
There are many causes for low back pain, including poor posture, insufficient sleep, lack of exercise, and stress. The first three are relatively easy to fix (even though they take some discipline). Stress management, however, can sometimes be difficult to handle, especially if you don't know exactly what is making you stressful. Is it work? Family? Your lifestyle?
Although the cause of your stress might be unknown, proper stress management doesn't always need to address individual causes. Simply incorporating certain stress management techniques into your daily routine can help reduce a substantial amount of stress in your life. For some, regular meditation and yoga are great treatments. For others, keeping a journal is effective. Still for others, daily hot baths do the trick.
Your Role As a Massage Therapist
As a massage therapist, your responsibilities extend well beyond traditional massage therapy. For not only must you give terrific "back rubs," but you must also advise your patients on how to change different aspects of their lifestyles if you suspect that bad habits are affecting their overall health or happiness. The more advice you can give your patients on stress management, the more effective you will become as a massage therapist.
